How it works

There are really two different jobs hiding under the word split, and this tool does both. The first is taking a document apart completely: a twelve-page PDF becomes twelve one-page PDFs, named after the original with the page number on the end. That is what you want when each page is its own thing — a batch of invoices scanned in one go, a set of certificates, a stack of forms that need to go to different people.
The second job is extraction: you have a long report and only need pages four to seven for the email you are writing. Type 4-7 and you get one small PDF containing just those pages, in that order. The page list accepts single numbers, ranges, and open ranges, so 1-3, 9, 15- means pages one to three, page nine, and everything from fifteen to the end.
Page numbers here are positions in the file, counting from one, not the numbers printed at the bottom of the pages. A report whose introduction is numbered i to iv and then starts at 1 has its printed page 1 at position 5. If you are not sure, open the file in any viewer and read the position off its page counter.
The pages that come out are exact copies of the pages that went in. Nothing is re-rendered, so text stays selectable and images keep their resolution. Bookmarks and cross-page links, which live outside the pages, do not come along.
Questions people ask
- Which page numbers should I type?
- The position in the file, starting at 1 — the number your PDF reader shows in its page counter. That is not always the number printed on the page itself, especially in documents with a preface or a cover.
- What does 8- mean?
- Page eight to the last page. Likewise -3 means the first three pages. You can mix these with plain numbers and ranges, separated by commas or spaces.
- Can I pull out pages in a different order?
- No. Pages come out in their original order regardless of how you list them. To reorder, split into single pages and merge them back in the sequence you want.
- Does splitting lose quality?
- No. Pages are copied as they are, not rendered to images. Text remains text, and the images inside keep their original resolution.
- Why did I get a .zip?
- Because splitting every page produces one file per page, and a zip is the only sensible way to hand you a dozen files at once. Extracting a page list gives a single PDF and no zip.
- Is the PDF uploaded?
- No. The document is read and split by your browser on this page. Nothing is sent to a server.
