How it works

Choosing PNG over JPG for a rendered PDF page comes down to what is on the page. PNG is lossless: every pixel the renderer draws is stored exactly, with no softening around edges. That matters for the things PDFs are usually full of — small text, thin rules in tables, line drawings, charts, screenshots of software. Rendered to JPG, those hard edges pick up faint smudges; rendered to PNG they stay perfectly crisp. Photographs, by contrast, look the same either way and are far smaller as JPG.

PNG also keeps transparency. A page with no background — a logo sheet, a stamp, a slide with a see-through backdrop — comes out with those areas transparent instead of filled white, so the image can be dropped onto any coloured background later. JPG cannot do that at all.

The typical uses follow from those two properties: a figure lifted out of a paper for a presentation, a page of a manual pasted into documentation, a form rendered so it can be annotated in a drawing app, an image for a website that needs sharp text at any zoom level. In each of those, the crispness is the point and the larger file is worth it.

Resolution works as it does for any render: 72 DPI matches the on-screen size, 150 is comfortable for viewing, 300 for print. Because PNG stores every pixel, file size climbs quickly with DPI — a 300 DPI page of dense text can run to several megabytes. Render only the pages you need, at the lowest DPI that still looks sharp.

Questions people ask

PNG or JPG — which should I pick?
PNG for text, tables, diagrams, line art and anything you will zoom into or need transparent. JPG for pages that are mostly photographs, where the smaller file matters more than pixel-perfect edges.
Is transparency preserved?
Yes. Areas of the page with no background stay transparent in the PNG instead of being filled with white, which is the one thing a JPG render cannot offer.
Why are the PNG files so big?
PNG stores every pixel exactly, and a high-DPI page has millions of them. Lower the DPI, render only the pages you need, or use the JPG tool for pages that are mostly photographs.
Which DPI should I use?
150 for screens, 300 for print, 72 for quick previews. Text and lines stay sharp at any of these because PNG does not blur edges; the setting only changes how many pixels you get.
Can I still select the text afterwards?
No. A rendered page is a picture; the text has become pixels. Keep the PDF for anything that needs the text to remain text.
